Jaipur is the place to shop until you drop! It has a plethora of handicrafts ranging from grimacing papier-mâché puppets to exquisitely carved furniture. You'll have to bargain hard tough - this city is accustomed to tourists with lots of money and little time to spend it. Shops around the tourist traps, such as the City Palace and Hawa Mahal, tend to be more expensive.

Jaipur is especially well known for precious stones, which seem cheaper here than elsewhere in India, and is even better known for semiprecious gems. There are many shops which offer bargain prices, but you do need to know your gems. Marble statues, costume jewellery and textile prints are other Jaipur specialities.

The Rajasthani emporium on MI Rd, near Ajmiri Gatre, sells an interesting range of handicrafts from around the state. Rajasthan Handloom House is next door, with a range of textiles. Another highly recommended place for textiles is the Anokhi showroom, at 2 Tilak Marg, near the Secretariat. It has high quality products such as block-printed fabrics, table-cloths, bed covers and cosmetic bags. Soma, out at 5 Jacob Rd in civil Lines, sells similar fare.

Kripal Kumbh, B-18A Shiva Marg in Bani Park, is a great place to see Jaipur's famous blue pottery. There's also Neerja (closed Sunday), S-19 Bhawani Singh Rd at C-Scheme. For good quality jootis (Traditional Rajasthani shoes), go to Charmica (opposite the Natraj restaurant) on MI Rd; a pair of jootis ranges from Rs 150 to Rs 350.

The Juneja Art Gallery, Lakshmi Complex on MI Rd (not far from the main post office), has a fabulous range of contemporary paintings by predominantly Rajasthani artists. Prices range from Rs 100 to Rs 50,000.
