Places to Eat
Niro's (MI Rd) was established in 1949 and is a favourite with Indians and westerners alike. It fills up fast (especially on week ends) but you can book ahead
(Tel No. 374493). There's an extensive menu offering excellent veg and
non-veg Indian, Chinese and continental food. Chicken pepper steak is Rs 130 and an American ice-cream soda will set you back cool Rs 60. The nearby
Surya Mahal serves good Indian food.
Natraj Rastaurant, near Niro's, is a very good veg place that's also popular for its Indian sweets and spicy nibbles. Their north Indian food is tasty; the vegetable bomb curry (Rs 70) is a blast.
Golden Dragon Restaurant, down the side street next to Niro's specialises in Chinese cuisine, but also serves some Indian dishes. The food is OK but not exceptional; Singapore noodles are Rs 70.
Bake Hut, nearby, offers a selection of sweet treats including chocolate donuts (Rs 8) and little lemon tarts (Rs 10). They can bake birthday cakes to order
(Tel No. 369840).
Venus Bakery (Subhash marg), just off MI Rd, also sells pastries. But the biggest and best selection of fresh breads and pastries can be found at
Hot Breads, in the Ganpati Plaza complex on MI Rd.
Lassiwala, opposite Niro's has its name up in brass and is the place to go for thick, creamy lassi which will set you back Rs 10/20 for a
small/jumbo cup.
Chanakya Rastaurant, on the north side of MI Rd, is highly recommended. The attentive staff are happy to explain the various pure veg menu items; continental dishes range from Rs 65 to Rs 150, and Indian food costs from Rs 45 to Rs 130.
Handi Restaurant, opposite the maun post office, is tucked away at the back of the Maya Mansions building. It's reasonable prices. In the evenings, you can get take away kababs at the entrance to the restaurant.
Copper Chimney, nearby, offers veg and nonveg Indian, continental and Chinese food in a pleasant setting. A main veg course ranges from Rs 50 to Rs 100, and between Rs 85 and Rs 200 fro non veg. Try the Rajasthani dish lal maas (mutton in a thick spicy gravy) for Rs 85.
Swaad (Ganpati Plaza, MI Rd) is recommended for a minir splurge. It has interesting Indian, continental and Chinese cuisine; travellers' favourites include subz malaai kofta-palak (cottage cheese and herbs in spinach gravy) for Rs 60 and the sizzlers (Rs 95 to Rs 165). Go downstairs for a beer. Desserts start at Rs 45, up to Rs 105 for the baked Alaska. In the same complex is the swanky, but less popular, Celebrations, which serves pure veg food.
Pizza Hut, also in the Ganpati Plaza, is the place to come if you're craving real pizza. There a traditional western-style pizzas, as well as 'fusion' creations, such as chicken tikka pizza. You can eat in, take away, or opt for a free delivery service
(Tel No. 388627).
Also in the Ganpati Plaza is Baskin Robbins, where you can indulge in ice creams which evocate names such as 'kiss me nut'.
Four Seasons (D-43A Subash Marg, C-Scheme) is not that centrally located, but the food is great. The multicuisine veg restaurant has moderately priced fare served in pleasant surroundings. A speciality is the rava dosa (Rs 35), which is a ground rice and semolina pancake with coconut, chilli, carrot and onion.
LMB (Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar), in Johari Bazaar, has been going strong since 1954, but the food and service are not as good as they once were. Main dishes range from Rs 35 to Rs 80. Out the front, a counter serves snacks and colourful Indian sweets.
Indian Coffee House (MI Rd), off the street, next to Arrow men's wear, is rather seedy inside, but good if you are craving a descent cup of coffee. Cheap south Indian food is also available.
Jaipur Inn (see Places to Stay) boasts one of the city's only roof top restaurants, with superlative views over Jaipur. The Indian veg buffet dinner cost Rs 100 (non-residents should book in advance).
Polo Bar, at the Rambagh Palace, is Jaipur's most atmospheric watering hole; a bottle of beer is Rs 150, cocktails are around Rs 250. Limited snack are available.
