Jaipur Inn

It is an old-time favourite with travellers. Run by retired Wing Commander R.N. Bhargava and his son, this place is certainly geared up for travellers. Rooms range from Spartan singles/doubles with common bath for Rs 200/250 to Rs 500/700 for better rooms with attached bath. Beds in the rather cramped dorm cost Rs 100, and you can even camp on the lawn (Rs 50 per person) if you have your own tent. Mozzie nets can be hired for Rs 15 per day, and bike hire is Rs 25 per day. Meals are available and the rooftop terrace commands sensational views.

Hotel Diggi Palace

Just off Sawai Ram Singh Marg, less than one km south of Ajmeri Gate, is another popular hang-out with budget travellers. Formerly the residence of the thakur (similar to a lord or baron) of Diggi, it has a lovely lawn area and relaxing ambience. Bare doubles with common bath (free bucket hot water) cost Rs 100 and Rs 125. With attached bath and geyser, they’re Rs 250; better air-cooled/air-con rooms are Rs400/750. Good meals are available in the restaurant.

Karni Niwas

It is in a lane behind the Hotel Neelam, is a down-to-earth place run by an amiable family. Clean singles/doubles with attached bath range from Rs 275/325 to Rs 600/650. Veg meals are available and there’s a pleasant rooftop terrace. Next door is the similarly priced Aangan Guest House (Tel No. 373449, fax 364596) is reasonably good.

The Hotel Arya Niwas

It is just off Sansar Chandra Marg, is another popular choice. This large but well maintained hotel has singles/doubles with attached bath from Rs 300/400. There’s a nice front lawn and a self-service veg. restaurant.

Evergreen Guest House 
(Tel No.363446, fax 204234)
It's a rambling hotel just off MI Road in the area known as Chameliwala Market. It’s a good place to meet other backpackers, although the cleanliness and service are variable. Facilities include a small swimming pool and a restaurant. Single/doubles with bath start at Rs 150/175 (free bucket hot water). Checkout is an ungenerous 10am.

Ashiyana Guest House 
(Tel No. 375414) 
It is nearby if you find the Evergreen too much of a scene. The cheapest rooms (with common bath and bucket hot water for Rs 10) go for Rs 70/150 a single/double. No meals are available. In the same area is a slightly cheaper but less impressive Hotel Pink Sun (Tel No. 370385).

Devi Niwas 
(Tel No. 363727, Dhuleshwar bagh, Sardar Patel Marg) 
It is an unpretentious little place with just a handful of rooms with bath (Rs 300).

Hotel Sweet Dream
(Tel No. 314409)
Located in the old city, has average singles/doubles with attached bath from Rs 230/300. There’s a veg restaurant on the rooftop.

Pipalda House 
(Tel No. 201925, D-240A Bank Rd, Bani Park
It has a basic singles/doubles with bath from Rs 150/250.

Hotel Kailash 
(Tel No. 565372, fax 566195)
It is opposite the Jama Masjid, is one of the few places to stay within the old city. It’s basic but friendly. Small singles/doubles cost Rs 150/175 with common bath, Rs 215/240 with private bath.

RDTC’s Hotel Swagatam 
(Tel No. 200595)
It is near the train station, has a rather institutional feel. Dorm beds are Rs 50; rooms with bath start at Rs 275/350 (including breakfast). Other RTDC budget hotels are the tourist Hotel (Tel No. 360238) and the  Hotel Teej (Tel No. 205482), which is actually a mid-range place but also has dorm beds (Rs 50).

Retiring rooms at the train station are handy if you’re catching an early-morning train. Singles/doubles with common bath are Rs 100/250, or Rs 400 with bath and air-con.

Places to Stay - Mid Range

Alsisar Haveli

It is a gracious 19th century mansion set in well-manicured gardens. Although more pricey than other mid-range places, its still a marvellous choice, with quaintly furnished rooms for Rs 1195/1550.

The Madhuban
(Tel No. 200033, fax 202244, D-237Behari Marg, Bani Park, email madhuban@usa.net)
It is heartily recommended if you carve a homey ambience with no hassles whatsoever. Run by the helpful ‘ Dicky’ and his family, singles/ doubles range from Rs 400/500 to Rs 850/950. The more expensive rooms have fine antique furnishings. They offer free pick-ups from the bus and train stations (ring ahead). There’s an indoor restaurant, or you can eat out in the pleasant garden. For dessert, try the delicious Rajasthani maalpuas.

The Hotel Meghniwas 
(Tel No. 202034, fax 201425, C-9 Sawai Jai Singh Hwy, Bani Park)
It is another excellent choice. This place is kept in tiptop condition by the charming owner, Mrs Indu Singh. Air-con single/doubles start at Rs 950/1000. Room Nos 201 and 209 are like mini-apartments and are ideal for long-term guests (Rs 1495). There’s a swimming pool, lawn area and good restaurant.

The Umaid Bhawan Guest House 
(Tel No. 296426, D1 – 2A Bani Park)
Situated behind the Collectorate via Bank Rd, has good singles/ doubles from Rs 350/450. a Regal suite costs Rs 1500.

Sajjan Niwas Guest House 
(Tel No.311544, fax 201494, D1-2B Bani Park)
It is great value with spacious, airy singles/doubles from Rs 300/400

Shapura House 
(Tel No.202293, fax 201494, D-257 Devi Marg, Bani Park)
This hotel has doubles from Rs 600 to Rs 1000.

Nnan-ki-haveli 
(Tel No.665502, fax 605481)
The hotel is located on Fateh Tiba, off Moti Dungri Marg, is a delightful place with a homey touch. Rooms are Rs 1095/1195 and meals are available

Charmi Palace Hotel 
(Tel No.365063, fax 364462, Dhuleshwar Bagh, Sardar Patel Margh
It has  decent singles/doubles for Rs 1050/1195; some rooms are better than others. There’s a cute restaurant and local sight seeing trips can be arranged (Rs190/ 310 for two/four hours).

LMB Hotel

It is right in the heart of the old city in Johari Bazaar, above the well-known restaurant of the same name. Ordinary singles/doubles are Rs 975/1275.

Hotel Neelam 
(Tel No. 372215, fax 367808, A-3 Motilal Atal Margh)
It's near the Polo Victory Cinema, has comfortable, if somewhat dank rooms from Rs 750/900 a single/double. There’s a veg restaurant.

Hotel Bissau Palace
(Tel No. 304391, fax 304628, email sanjai@jp1.dot.net.in)
Located north of Chandpol, it was built by the rawal (nobleman) of Bissau. The cheapest singles/doubles are Rs 600/750; some rooms have more character than others. There are two restaurants (one on the rooftop with fine views), a swimming pool and interesting library. They can also arrange good village tours at their country estate, the Retreat – see Organised Tours Earlier in this section.

Narain Niwas Palace Hotel

It is housed on Narain Singh Rd, is another royal building, although it’s looking a little faded around the edges these days. Singles/doubles start at Rs 1195/1750. There’s a pool and nice garden. The owners also operate the Royal Castle Kanota 14 km south east of Jaipur

RTDC’s Hotel Teej 
(Tel No. 205482)
To be found at Bani Park, and has slightly musty rooms from Rs 450/550. Just off MI Rd, RDTC’s Hotel Gangaur (Tel No.361233) is similarly priced.

Places To Stay: Top End

Raj Vilas

Located about 8km from the city centre on Goner Rd, it is the most upmarket hotel in Jaipur, if not Rajasthan. Run by the Oberoi Group, this sophisticated boutique hotel has 71 rooms yet still manages to retain a personal touch. Set on over 12 hectares, all rooms are immaculate and tastefully decorated. Deluxe singles/doubles are US$260/280, luxury tents are US$300 and villas (each with their own pool) range from US$600 to US$1000. Auryvedic treatments are available in the health centre.

Rambagh Palace

This was once the Maharaja of Jaipur’s residence, but is now a stylish hotel operated by the Taj Group. Standard singles/doubles are US$185/200 superior rooms cost US$220/240; the ‘maharaja suite’ is US$475, and the ‘royal suite’ is US$675. if you’re going to splurge, take one of the more expensive rooms, which are more sumptuous. If you can’t afford to stay, at least treat yourself to an evening drink at the Polo Bar

Jai Mahal Palace Hotel

It's on the corner of Jacob and Ajmer Rds. Also run by the Taj Group, this property has rooms beginning at US$155/175. in the evening you can consult the astrologer (Rs 200).

Rajmahal Palace 
(Tel No.381625, fax381887, Sadar Patel Marg
This is also run by the Taj Group, but is more modest than the Rambag or Jai Mahal. It is the former British Residency and offers standard singles/doubles for US$70/80. There’s a pool and good restaurant. The huge forecourt is popular for wedding receptions.

Samode Haveli

It is one of the most interesting top-end places to stay. This 200-year-old building was once to town house of the rawal (nobleman) of Samode, who was also prime minister of Jaipur. There’s an impressive dining room, and a couple of breathtaking suites, including one totally covered with original mirror work. Doubles range from Rs 2200 to Rs 2395.

Trident

It is north of the city (opposite Jal Mahal: the \water Palace) and is run by the Oberoi Group. Attractive rooms cost Rs 3600/3900.

Mansingh Hotel

Located off Sansar Chandra Marg in the centre if town, this hotel has rooms from Rs 1995/3000. Amenities include a pool, health club and two restaurants.

Rajputana Palace Sheraton 
(Tel No. 360011, fax 367848) 
It is between Station and Palace Rds. Run by Welcomgroup, it’s not a palace as the name suggests, but rather a modern hotel built around a swimming pool. Standard singles/doubles cost US$ 130/140. There’s a coffee shop, bar, two restaurants, a disco and a health club.

The Hotel Clarks Amer

It is less expensive but inconveniently located about 10km south of the city centre. 

Other top-end hotels in Jaipur include the Holiday Inn (Tel No. 635000, fax 635608, Amber Rd), with rooms from Rs 2000/3200 (including a buffet breakfast), and the less exciting Hotel Jaipur Ashok (Tel No.204491, fax 202099, Bani Park).
