Air 

Numerous international airlines are conveniently based in the Jaipur Towers building on MI Rd, including Ansett Australia, Air New Zealand, Air Canada, Unites Airlines and Air France.

You can book all domestic flights at a travel agent, such as Satyam Travels & Tours (( 378794, fax 375426, on the ground floor of the Jaipur towers building. The office is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm. The Indian Airlines office (( 514500) is a little out of town on Tonk Rd, the southern extension of Sawai Ram Singh Marg. Indian Airlines operates flights between Delhi and Jaipur (US$ 55) daily, and most flights continue to Mumbai (Bombay) (US $ 125). There are several weekly flights between Jaipur and Mumbai (US$140), Ahemdabad (US$95, Calcutta (US$200) and Jaisalmer US$110). Private airlines sometimes put on extra flights during the tourist season (check with a travel agent).


Bus 

Rajasthan State Transport Corporation (RSTC) buses all leave from the main bus station on Station Rd, picking up passengers at Narian Singh Circle. Some services are deluxe (essentially non-stop). There is a left- luggage office at the main terminal (Rs 5 per bag for 12 hours), as well as a prepaid auto-rickshaw stand. The deluxe busses all leave from platform No 3, which is tucked away in the right-hand corner of the bus station. These buses should be booked in advance, and the reservation office is also at platform No 3. for express bus inquires call (206143; (205621 for deluxe bus.

There are deluxe buses to many destinations including Delhi (Rs 190), Jodhpur (Rs 160), Kota (Rs 120), Ajmer (Rs 63), Udaipur (Rs200), Bikaner (Rs 168), Bharatpur (Rs 87), Bundi (R111), Mt Abu (Rs 246, Jaisalmer (Rs 286), Chittorgarh (Rs 152) and Jhunjhunu (Rs 87).

Numerous private travel agencies in Jaipur book services to major cities. There's a cluster along Motilal Atal Marg, near the Polo Victory Cinema.


Train

The reasonably efficient computerised railway reservation office (Tel. no.  201401) is in the building to your right as you exit the main train station. It's open (for advance reservations only) Monday to Saturday 8 am to 2 pm and 2.15 to 8 pm; Sunday 8 am to 2 pm. Join the queue for 'Freedom fighters and Foreign tourists' (counter 769). For same-day travel, you'll need to buy your ticket at the train station. For metre-gauge trains, the booking office is on platform No 6. For railway inquiries call tel.no.131.
Many of the lines into Jaipur have been converted to broad gauge. As other parts of the state's railway are converted expect disruptions to services.


Cars 

Cars and drivers can be hired through numerous travel agencies, including Sita World Travels (( 203626) on Station Rd. Costs at Sita are Rs 4.50 per kilometre (minimum 250 km per day) for a non air-con car, or Rs 7.50 for an air-con car; the overnight charge is an extra Rs 75 per day. Competition between tour operators is high, so it's worth bargaining.

If you're game, self drive rental cars can be hired at Hertz (Tel. no. 635000, fax 609090), which has a desk at the Holiday Inn on Amber Rd. It costs about Rs 2000 per day.
