Rajasthan has various schools of miniature painting, largely derived from the Mughal style but with some clear differences - in particular, the palace and hunting scenes are complemented by religious themes, particularly relating to the Krishna legends.
Most of Rajasthan's early architecture was damaged or destroyed by the first waves of Muslim invaders. Fragments remaining from that period include the "Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra" in Ajmer.
There are buildings dating from the 10th to 15th centuries, including the superb Jain temples at Ranakpur and Mount Abu.
Most of the great forts date, in their present form, from the Mughal period.
