Local Tourist Offices
In addition to the national (Government of India) tourist office, each state also maintains its own tourist office, and this can lead to some confusion. The state tourist offices vary widely in their efficiency and usefulness. Some are very good, some are hopeless.
In many state the tourism ministry also runs a chain of Tourist Bungalows which generally offer good accommodation at very reasonable prices. You can usually find the state tourist office in these bungalows.
The overlap between national and state tourist offices often causes wasteful duplication. Both might produce a brochure on a place A, while neither has anything on place B.
To add to the confusion, in addition to the Government of India tourist office, in many places you will also find an office of the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). The latter is more an actual 'doing' organisation then a 'telling' one. For example, the ITDC will actually operate the tour bus for which the tourist office sells tickets.
The ITDC also runs a series of hotels and travellers' lodges around the country under the Ashok name. States may also have a tourist transport operation equivalent to the national ITDC, so in some cities you might find that there's a national and a state tourist operator as well as a national and state tourist office. Of course, this still doesn't guarantee that you'll be able to find the information you're after.
The Department of Tourism has a Web site www.tourindia.com.
Tourist Offices Abroad
The Government of India Department Tourism maintains a string of tourist
offices in other countries where you can get worth while brochures, leaflets and information. But not all foreign offices are as useful for obtaining information as those within India. There are also smaller 'promotion offices; in Osaka (Japan) and Dallas, Miami, San Francisco and Washington DC (USA).
