Maps

Lonely Planet's India Travel Atlas breaks the country down into over 100 pages of maps, and so gives unequalled coverage. It is fully indexed and the book format means it is easy to refer to, especially on buses and trains.

The Lascelles 1:4,000,000 map of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka is probably the most useful general map of India; it was recently updated and expanded. The Bartholomews map is similar, and is widely available in India and overseas.

The Nelles Verlag series gives more detailed coverage, but you need to carry five maps to cover the whole country. They are excellent maps, but aren't widely available in India.

Locally, Nest & Wings produces a reasonable series of maps for Himalaya regions. The Survey of India has maps covering all of India available from its Delhi office. The maps are not all that useful since the government will not allow production of anything at a reasonable scale which shows India's sea or land borders, and many of them date back to the 1970s. It is illegal to take any Survey of India map of larger than 1:250,000 scale out of the country.

The Government of India tourist office has a number of excellent giveaway city maps and also a reasonable all-India map. State tourist offices do not have much in the way of maps, but the Himachal Pradesh office has three excellent trekking maps which cover the routes in that state.
